AirPods Pro 3 Heart Rate Not Working? Fix Missing, Dimmed, and Inaccurate Readings
Share
If your AirPods Pro 3 heart rate is missing, dimmed, showing dashes, or jumping between inconsistent readings, start with the basics that directly affect the sensor: confirm heart-rate monitoring is enabled, start an active workout, and make sure the sensor is touching the skin inside your ear. Apple specifically says that a dimmed heart-rate value or dashes during a workout can point to poor fit or a lost iPhone connection.
AirPods Pro 3 use in-ear heart-rate sensors during workouts. The feature can feed heart-rate data to Apple Fitness, Health, and supported third-party workout apps on iPhone. Most failures fall into one of four categories: the feature is turned off, no workout is active, the sensor is not making reliable skin contact, or the app does not have the Health permissions it needs.
Quick diagnosis: what your symptom usually means
| Symptom | Most likely area to check | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Heart rate is dimmed or shows dashes | Ear fit or iPhone connection | Reseat the AirPods and confirm they are connected |
| No heart-rate reading before a workout | Normal workout behavior | Start a workout in Fitness or a supported app |
| Apple Fitness works but a third-party app does not | App support or Health permissions | Check the app's Health access and start the workout inside that app |
| Readings appear only intermittently | Skin contact, tip size, or sensor condition | Adjust fit and make sure the sensor is clean and dry |
| Heart Rate setting is off | Feature disabled | Settings > your AirPods > Heart Rate |
| AirPods and Apple Watch both report heart rate | Normal multi-source behavior | No fix is normally needed; Apple selects the highest-confidence source |
1. Confirm that heart-rate monitoring is turned on
Apple says heart-rate monitoring on AirPods Pro 3 is enabled by default, but it can be turned off. Put your AirPods Pro 3 in your ears and connect them to your iPhone. Then open Settings, tap the name of your AirPods near the top of the screen, and make sure Heart Rate is turned on.
If the AirPods name does not appear in Settings, treat that as a connection problem before troubleshooting the sensor itself. Reconnect the earbuds first. CASEBX has a separate guide for connecting AirPods to an iPhone if the pairing is the part that is failing.
2. Start an actual workout before judging the sensor
AirPods Pro 3 do not act like an all-day continuous heart-rate monitor. Apple documents continuous heart-rate measurement while a workout is active in the Fitness app or a supported third-party workout app. When the workout ends, that workout heart-rate monitoring ends as well.
For Apple's Fitness app, wear at least one AirPod, confirm the AirPods are connected to the iPhone, open Fitness, tap Workout, and start a workout. If you were checking the Health app before starting an activity and assumed the sensor was dead because no live value appeared, test again during a workout instead.
You can review recorded data later in Health > Search > Heart > Heart Rate. That is useful for separating a display problem from a recording problem: if the workout app's screen looked odd but Health contains the session data, the sensor may have been recording correctly.
3. Fix the fit so the heart-rate sensor actually touches your skin
Fit is unusually important here because the AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate sensor requires skin contact. Apple notes that the ear-tip size that gives the best heart-rate accuracy may not be the same size that gives the best acoustic seal.
Apple's current fit guidance is specific: insert the ear tip into your ear canal, rotate the stem toward your face at about a 45-degree angle, and gently press the AirPod so the heart-rate sensor rests against your ear. If readings are inconsistent, try another ear-tip size. You may even need different sizes in your left and right ears.
If you also want to check the acoustic seal, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the More Info button next to your AirPods Pro 3, then choose Acoustic Seal Test on iOS 26 or later. Do not treat a good acoustic seal as proof that heart-rate contact is perfect, however; Apple explicitly separates those two fit considerations.
For the full fit procedure, see Apple's AirPods Pro ear-tip guide.
4. Make sure the sensor surface is clean and dry
If the fit feels secure but the reading keeps dropping out, inspect the area of each AirPod that touches the inside of your ear. Apple recommends keeping the heart-rate sensor clean and dry and checking in a mirror that the sensor is actually contacting your skin.
This is especially useful when one earbud seems reliable and the other does not. Instead of immediately resetting both AirPods, reseat each side and compare whether changing the tip size or angle restores stable contact. The goal is not to press the earbuds uncomfortably hard; it is to maintain consistent sensor-to-skin contact.
5. Check whether the problem is the third-party workout app
If Apple Fitness can show your AirPods Pro 3 heart rate but another fitness app cannot, that result narrows the problem considerably. Apple says heart-rate data works with supported third-party workout apps, and the app needs permission to read heart-rate data and to read and record workouts in Apple Health.
Open the third-party workout app and start the workout from inside that app. On first use with Apple Health, approve the requested Health access. If you previously denied it, review the app's Health permissions before changing broader iPhone settings.
A useful isolation test is simple: start a short workout in Apple's Fitness app. If heart rate appears there, the AirPods sensor and iPhone connection are functioning at least in Apple's own workflow. At that point, focus on whether the other app supports AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate input and whether its Health permissions are enabled. Do not assume every workout app can consume the data just because it can record an activity.
6. Reconnect the AirPods if the value is dimmed or dashed
Apple's own troubleshooting note says that if your heart rate is dimmed or displayed as dashes, make sure the AirPods Pro 3 have the right fit and are connected to your iPhone. That makes Bluetooth connection a first-line check, not a last resort.
Open Control Center or Bluetooth settings and verify that the AirPods are actively connected. If they keep disconnecting, put them in the charging case, reconnect, and retest during a workout. If the iPhone itself is behaving strangely after the connection is restored, a normal restart is a reasonable low-risk next step; CASEBX has instructions for restarting or force-restarting an iPhone.
Avoid jumping straight to Reset Network Settings. Apple does not list that as a standard fix for AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate readings, and it changes saved network settings without first addressing the more direct causes Apple documents.
7. Update your AirPods firmware and keep iOS current
Firmware matters because AirPods features and fixes are delivered through firmware updates. Apple's current AirPods firmware page lists 8B41 for AirPods Pro 3. Apple can update that page at any time, so check the current listing rather than treating one version number as permanent.
To check your version on iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the Info button next to your AirPods, and scroll to About. Apple says AirPods firmware updates are delivered automatically while the AirPods are charging and within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is connected to Wi-Fi.
If your AirPods are behind, Apple's documented update process is to update the Apple device first, turn on Bluetooth, connect the AirPods, connect the Apple device to Wi-Fi, connect the charging case to power, put the AirPods in the case, close the lid, and keep the case within Bluetooth range. Apple instructs users to leave the lid closed for at least 30 minutes before reconnecting and checking the firmware version again.
You can verify the latest version and Apple's exact update steps on the AirPods firmware support page.
8. Update the Health profile information used for workout metrics
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 send heart-rate and motion-sensor data to the iPhone to calculate workout and activity metrics. It also says information stored in Health—such as height, weight, gender, and age—is used together with sensor data for calculations including calories burned.
If the heart-rate number itself appears but other workout metrics seem wrong, review your Health details before assuming the heart-rate sensor is inaccurate. This is a different symptom from a heart-rate field that is blank or dashed. For missing readings, fit and connection remain the more direct Apple-documented checks.
What if you are also wearing an Apple Watch?
You do not need to disable your Apple Watch just because you are wearing AirPods Pro 3. Apple says that when both devices are worn during a workout, they provide multiple streams of heart-rate data and the highest-confidence source at that moment is used automatically.
That means a heart-rate value appearing while both devices are active does not prove that one sensor has replaced or disabled the other. If your goal is troubleshooting, first confirm the AirPods work in Apple's documented Fitness workflow rather than changing Watch settings unnecessarily.
When the AirPods may need further support
If the Heart Rate setting is on, a workout is active, the AirPods are connected, the sensors are clean and making good skin contact, and Apple's Fitness app still shows a dimmed value or dashes after current software and firmware are installed, you have already ruled out the main user-correctable causes in Apple's guidance.
At that point, avoid repeatedly resetting unrelated iPhone settings. Use Apple's support options for AirPods so the remaining connection or hardware issue can be diagnosed. Apple's primary heart-rate instructions are available in its AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can AirPods Pro 3 measure heart rate without an Apple Watch?
Yes. Apple documents using AirPods Pro 3 with an iPhone to view heart rate during workouts in Fitness and supported third-party fitness apps. An Apple Watch is not required for that workflow.
Why does my AirPods Pro 3 heart rate show dashes?
Apple specifically says to check two things when the heart-rate value is dimmed or shown as dashes: make sure the AirPods Pro 3 have the right fit and make sure they are connected to the iPhone.
Do I need to wear both AirPods for heart-rate tracking?
No. Apple's Fitness and third-party app instructions say to wear at least one AirPod while the AirPods are connected to the iPhone.
Why does Apple Fitness show heart rate but my workout app does not?
The third-party app must support the feature and have permission to read heart-rate data and to read and record workouts in Apple Health. If Fitness works, check the other app's support and Health permissions before troubleshooting the sensor again.
Do AirPods Pro 3 track heart rate all day?
Apple describes continuous heart-rate measurement while a workout is active in Fitness or a supported third-party app. Ending the workout ends that workout heart-rate monitoring, so this should not be treated as an all-day continuous heart-rate tracker.
