Apple Pay Not Working on iPhone? Fix Wallet, Card, and Contactless Issues

If Apple Pay is not working on your iPhone, the right fix depends on what is actually failing. If Wallet does not open, check your default contactless app. If you cannot add a card or the card is declined, the bank or card issuer is often the next place to check. If the payment terminal does not react, confirm that Wallet opened correctly, authenticate, and hold the top of the iPhone near a compatible reader. Start with the symptom below instead of resetting your iPhone.

First, identify which Apple Pay problem you have

What you see Most useful first check
Another app opens instead of Wallet Check the default Contactless Apps setting
“Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” or “Card Device Limit” Check Apple Pay requirements, then contact the card issuer
The card is in Wallet but the purchase is declined Contact the bank or card issuer
Wallet opens, but the store terminal does not react Check payment flow, terminal acceptance, and card network acceptance
Apple Pay is missing on a website or in an app Confirm that the merchant offers Apple Pay in that checkout

This distinction matters because Apple Pay is not one single failure point. Wallet can be configured correctly while a card issuer declines a transaction, and a card can be valid while a merchant does not accept that card network through Apple Pay.

If Wallet does not open when you double-click the side button

On current iPhone software, another contactless payment app can be selected as the default in supported countries and regions, including the United States. When another contactless app is the default, double-clicking the side button or bringing an unlocked iPhone near a contactless reader can launch that app instead of presenting the cards saved in Apple Wallet.

To check the default app:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Default Apps.
  4. Tap Contactless Apps.
  5. If you want Wallet to launch automatically for contactless payments, select Apple Wallet.

If you intentionally use another default contactless app, you can still use Apple Pay by opening Wallet, selecting the card, and authenticating before paying. Apple explains this behavior in its guide to using Apple Pay when Wallet is not the default contactless app.

If you cannot add a card to Apple Wallet

A card-add problem is different from a purchase being declined. Apple recommends checking the basic Apple Pay requirements first. Your iPhone should be on current software, use a supported device and region, have a passcode or supported biometric authentication configured, and have two-factor authentication enabled for the Apple Account. The card also needs to come from a participating issuer.

If Wallet shows Could Not Add Card, Invalid Card, or Card Device Limit, Apple specifically directs users to contact the bank or card issuer. Apple does not approve or decline cards for Apple Pay.

Use Apple’s current card-add troubleshooting checklist before deleting other settings or resetting the iPhone.

If the card is in Wallet but the payment is declined

If the card appears normally in Wallet and you can authenticate, but the transaction is declined, the failure is not automatically an iPhone problem. Apple states that Apple Pay transactions are routed to the card issuer for approval, and the issuer can decline a transaction according to its own rules.

In this case:

  1. Do not repeatedly remove and re-add the same card as your first troubleshooting step.
  2. If you have another supported card in Wallet, trying it can help determine whether the problem is limited to one card or affects Apple Pay more broadly.
  3. If only one card is being declined, contact that bank or card issuer and ask about the Apple Pay transaction.

Apple’s declined-card guidance confirms that the bank or issuer is responsible for the approval decision.

If the payment terminal does not react to your iPhone

For an in-store Apple Pay purchase on an iPhone with Face ID, double-click the side button, authenticate, then hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader until you see Done and a checkmark. On an iPhone with Touch ID, double-click the Home button before presenting the phone to the reader.

If Wallet opens and authenticates correctly but the reader still does not respond, check these points before assuming the iPhone hardware is faulty:

  • Make sure the checkout actually supports contactless payment or displays an accepted contactless symbol.
  • Ask the merchant whether that specific terminal is working for contactless payments.
  • Remember that a merchant must accept both Apple Pay and the payment card and payment network you are trying to use.
  • Try another Apple Pay card if one is available and appropriate.

Apple’s official Apple Pay purchase instructions describe the correct reader position and also note that merchant acceptance of the payment card and network is required.

If Apple Pay works in stores but is missing on a website or in an app

Apple Pay is available online or in an app when the merchant presents Apple Pay as a payment option. If the button is not offered at that checkout, the absence of the button does not by itself prove that Wallet is broken on your iPhone.

If the Apple Pay button is present but checkout fails, verify the information the merchant asks you to confirm, such as the selected payment card, billing details, shipping information, or contact information. If the transaction itself is declined after authentication, return to the issuer check above.

Check for an Apple service issue

Before making major changes to your iPhone, check Apple System Status. If Apple reports a relevant service disruption, waiting for the service to recover is more appropriate than resetting network settings, removing cards, or erasing the device.

Update iOS if your iPhone is behind

Apple includes current software among the requirements to check when Apple Pay cards cannot be added. To look for an update:

  1. Back up important data before installing a system update.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap Software Update.
  5. If an update is available, follow the onscreen instructions to download and install it.

Apple’s current iPhone software update instructions use this path.

What not to reset first

An Apple Pay problem does not automatically justify Reset Network Settings, Reset All Settings, or Erase All Content and Settings. Apple’s current troubleshooting for cards that cannot be added focuses first on eligibility, current software, authentication requirements, service or connection issues, and the card issuer.

Likewise, avoid removing a card that still works for some transactions unless there is a specific reason to re-provision it. Re-adding a payment card can require the issuer to verify the card again, so it is better to identify whether the issue is Wallet configuration, merchant acceptance, or issuer approval first.

When to contact the bank and when to contact Apple

Problem Best next contact Why
Card is declined during a purchase Bank or card issuer The issuer approves or declines the Apple Pay transaction
“Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” or “Card Device Limit” Bank or card issuer after checking Apple Pay requirements Apple directs these errors to the issuer
Merchant does not accept your card/network through Apple Pay Merchant or card issuer Acceptance depends on the checkout and payment network
Another contactless app opens instead of Wallet Check iPhone Settings first The default contactless app can change side-button and reader behavior
Wallet cannot open or behaves incorrectly across multiple supported cards and merchants Apple Support after software and service checks The pattern is less likely to be limited to one issuer or one terminal

Common Apple Pay questions

Why does another payment app open when I double-click the side button?

Another app may be selected as your default contactless app. In the United States and other supported regions, check Settings → Apps → Default Apps → Contactless Apps. Select Apple Wallet if you want Wallet to launch automatically.

Why does my physical card work but Apple Pay gets declined?

The issuer can apply rules to an Apple Pay transaction separately from the fact that the physical card account is active. Apple says all Apple Pay transactions are routed to the card issuer for approval, so the issuer is the correct source for the exact decline reason.

Can I use Apple Pay with any credit or debit card?

No. Apple Pay requires a supported card from a participating card issuer, and availability varies by market. The merchant also needs to accept the card and payment network used for the purchase.

Why is there no Apple Pay button on a website?

Apple Pay can be used online when the merchant offers Apple Pay as a payment option. A missing button can therefore be a merchant or checkout-availability issue rather than a Wallet failure on the iPhone.
