Modern Leather Case: the reason to buy Nomad
The $69 Modern Leather Case is the most distinctive Nomad option for iPhone 17. Nomad currently uses full-grain leather that is designed to develop a patina, plus a polycarbonate frame, protective microfiber lining and grippy TPU bumper. It also includes a tactile Camera Control interface, anodized aluminum buttons and an internal lanyard attachment system.
Nomad publishes an 8-foot drop-protection claim for the current iPhone 17 Modern Leather Case. CASEBX has not independently reproduced that test, so it should be treated as a manufacturer specification rather than a comparative lab result.
Sport / Modern Case: smoother and easier to pocket
Nomad's current site has some naming overlap: a product titled Sport Case describes the Modern Case platform. The current iPhone 17 Pro page lists a smooth satin backplate, grippy TPU bumper, tactile Camera Control, aluminum buttons, an 8-foot manufacturer claim and MagSafe/Qi2 compatibility at $55.
The important buying distinction is material. This is not a leather case. It is aimed at buyers who like Nomad's hardware details and magnetic ecosystem but prefer a smoother, lower-maintenance surface.
Rugged options: verify the exact model before buying
Nomad continues to sell Rugged-family cases, including leather and non-leather variants, but prices and availability can vary with overstock and model generation. The old review combined different generations and assigned one set of lab results to all of them. This update avoids that mistake: check the exact iPhone 17 model page for its current materials, price and drop claim.
MagSafe and Qi2
Modern Leather and the current Sport/Modern platform explicitly support MagSafe and Qi2 charging. Nomad uses integrated magnets rather than requiring a stick-on magnetic ring. The old article included calibrated magnet-force claims that CASEBX did not actually measure, so those numbers have been removed.
Are Nomad cases waterproof?
No current source reviewed for this update supports calling these cases fully waterproof or submersible enclosures. The old article's statement that Sport and Rugged cases were “fully waterproof” was too strong and has been removed. A case material tolerating everyday moisture is not the same as an IP-rated waterproof system. Do not submerge an iPhone because it is wearing a Nomad case.
Leather aging and care
Natural leather changes with use. Nomad specifically presents patina as part of the Modern Leather experience, meaning marks and color variation are expected rather than defects. That makes it a poor choice if you want a case to look factory-new indefinitely, but a strong choice if you like leather that develops character.
