Protection: it is a tie on OtterBox’s current 3X rating
This is the biggest correction to the old comparison. Current iPhone 17 Commuter and Symmetry are both listed by OtterBox as 3X tested to military drop standard 810G-516.6. The previous article tried to create a performance gap through CASEBX concrete-drop results and exact measurements that were not documented.
Because OtterBox places both models in the same published 3X tier, buyers should focus on construction and everyday features instead of assuming Commuter automatically has a higher certified drop rating.
Commuter: dual layer and port covers for less money
Commuter costs $49.99. OtterBox describes a dual-layer structure with a rigid outer shell for scrapes and an inner rubber cover for impact absorption. It also has grippy sides, raised screen/camera edges and port covers designed to block dust and dirt.
