Two different protection philosophies
OtterBox protects primarily by building a case that can absorb a fall. Loopy adds a second idea: make the phone easier to hold so a fall is less likely in the first place. That makes this less of a traditional “which shell is stronger?” comparison and more a choice between rugged hardware and grip-first ergonomics.
For iPhone 17, OtterBox Defender Series Pro XT is a useful current reference. It costs $79.99, uses a rugged dual-layer pressure-fitted design, has port covers, built-in MagSafe magnets and a Camera Control button. OtterBox says it is tested 7X to the military standard.
Current Loopy cases commonly sit around $39.99–$42.99 and advertise an 8-foot drop-tested claim. Their defining feature is the interchangeable flexible finger loop.

MagSafe is the biggest practical difference
Defender Series Pro XT has built-in magnets and is explicitly designed for MagSafe accessories. Loopy's own guidance says its cases have not been found compatible with Apple's MagSafe feature because the loop occupies the back of the case.
If you rely on a magnetic car mount, wallet, battery pack or bedside stand, OtterBox is the straightforward choice. Loopy may work with some flat wireless-charging combinations, but wireless charging is not the same as full MagSafe accessory compatibility and should not be guaranteed across setups.
Grip and hand comfort
Loopy has the more distinctive solution. Sliding a finger through the loop gives the phone an anchor point, which can make large devices easier to handle while taking photos, walking or reaching across the screen. This benefit depends on actually using the loop.
OtterBox relies on textured/grippy edges and a more conventional shape. It will feel more familiar if you do not want a permanent loop protruding from the back of the phone.
Protection claims need context
OtterBox's 7X military-standard language and Loopy's 8-foot claim are manufacturer statements created under different programs. They do not allow CASEBX to calculate a direct protection ratio. The previous article's invented concrete tests have been deleted.
Defender Pro XT adds practical rugged features beyond a drop number: raised edges, port covers and dual-layer structure. Loopy's unique protective contribution is behavioral—keeping the phone attached to your hand.
Which should you buy?
- Choose OtterBox if MagSafe, port covers and rugged structure are priorities.
- Choose Loopy if you frequently feel insecure holding a large phone one-handed and are willing to trade away normal MagSafe use.
- Choose a slimmer OtterBox line if Defender-level bulk is unnecessary; OtterBox also sells Symmetry Series for iPhone 17.
