The previous version described OtterBox as $50–$70 and Spigen as mostly $15–$30. Current iPhone 17 pricing is closer. Spigen still offers cheaper models, but its more advanced Mag Fit cases now overlap with OtterBox's midrange pricing.

Everyday comparison: Commuter vs Rugged Armor
OtterBox Commuter is $49.99. The current iPhone 17 version has a dual-layer structure, port cover, grippy sides, built-in magnets and an integrated Camera Control button. OtterBox lists it at 3X tested to military drop standard 810G-516.6.
Spigen Rugged Armor Mag Fit is $39.99 and uses flexible TPU with impact foam, a non-slip finish and built-in magnets. It is $10 cheaper and more minimalist, but it does not offer Commuter's port-cover feature.
Rugged comparison: Defender Pro XT vs Tough Armor T
Defender Pro XT costs $79.99 and is 7X tested to military drop standard according to OtterBox. It adds grippy rubber edges, raised screen/camera protection, port covers, MagSafe magnets and a built-in Camera Control button.
Tough Armor T costs $59.99. It uses triple-layer construction with AI-optimized XRD foam, a built-in kickstand, MagSafe compatibility and a capacitive Camera Control cover. Spigen lists a two-year manufacturing warranty.
The choice is therefore not simply “maximum protection vs cheap case.” Defender is $20 more and brings OtterBox's higher published test tier plus port coverage. Tough Armor T gives you an integrated stand and more complex impact-foam construction for less.
MagSafe is now standard on the key current models
The old article suggested Commuter often lacked magnets and Rugged Armor usually did not support MagSafe. That is stale for the exact iPhone 17 models compared here. Current Commuter has built-in magnets, and Rugged Armor is explicitly sold in a Mag Fit version.
Holster: check current OtterBox terms
The old article treated the Defender holster as automatically included in the box. OtterBox's current iPhone 17 Defender Pro XT page instead advertises a free holster available post-purchase under its current offer. Offers can change, so buyers should verify the current product page rather than assuming a permanent bundle.
