Smartish Gripzilla for iPhone 18 Pro Review: The $34.99 Case Built Around Not Dropping Your Phone

A phone case can survive an impressive drop and still fail at the most basic job: helping you avoid the drop in the first place.

That is the logic behind Smartish Gripzilla. The $34.99 iPhone 18 Pro case uses pronounced finger grooves, textured sides and a rigid backplate rather than chasing a perfectly smooth silhouette. It also includes built-in magnets for MagSafe and Qi2 accessories.

Research-based review: CASEBX has not physically tested Gripzilla’s grip, magnetic strength or drop performance. Product claims below come from Smartish unless otherwise noted.

Gripzilla is deliberately not subtle

Some cases add a few ribs to the side and call themselves grippy. Gripzilla shapes the sides around your fingers. That choice gives the case a distinct purpose: it is for people who are more annoyed by a slippery phone than by a slightly more sculpted case.

The design will not appeal equally to everyone. If you slide your phone in and out of tight pockets all day, or prefer straight minimalist edges, the grooves can feel like visual and physical clutter. If you routinely use the phone one-handed, they make more sense.

Why $34.99 is interesting

Smartish’s current iPhone 18 Pro Gripzilla is $34.99. That puts it below many premium magnetic cases while retaining built-in magnets, air-pocket corners, raised camera protection and Smartish’s grip-first geometry.

The strongest feature may be prevention, not impact absorption

Cases are usually marketed after the accident: drop height, shock material, reinforced corners. Gripzilla is more persuasive before the accident. A case that is easier to hold can reduce the situations in which impact protection has to do its job.

That is editorial reasoning, not a measured claim that Gripzilla causes fewer drops. Human hands differ, and a texture one person loves can irritate another. Still, it is a more useful way to think about the product than comparing one drop number with another.

MagSafe does not require giving up the grip

Smartish says Gripzilla uses built-in magnets and works with MagSafe and Qi2 accessories. That matters because grip cases historically relied on thick rubbery backs that could make magnetic accessories less convincing.

The brand also sells the slimmer Gripmunk with magnets. The choice between them is less about charging and more about how much side texture you want. Gripzilla is the intentionally more aggressive option.

What owner feedback can tell us — and what it cannot

Smartish has a long-running reputation among case enthusiasts for grip and value, but exact iPhone 18 Pro history is still too short for meaningful long-term conclusions. Older discussions commonly praise Smartish’s tactile sides and price, while some buyers simply prefer smoother or thinner cases.

I would not turn that into a durability score. The useful pattern is preference: people who buy Smartish often buy it because the sides feel secure, not because the brand is trying to look luxurious.

The awkward question: do you actually need this much grip?

If your phone spends most of the day on a desk or mounted in a car, maybe not. A slimmer case can feel cleaner and still provide reasonable protection.

Gripzilla becomes more compelling when the phone is constantly in your hand: commuting, photographing kids, walking a dog, navigating outdoors, working on-site, or simply using a large phone one-handed. In those situations, side geometry is not cosmetic.

Verdict

At $34.99, Gripzilla does not need to pretend to be a luxury case. Its value is that Smartish spends the design budget on a problem people actually notice every hour: keeping a glass-and-metal phone under control.

Buy it if you like tactile, shaped sides and want MagSafe without moving into $50-plus pricing. Skip it if your idea of a good case is one you barely feel. Gripzilla’s personality is literally in the way your fingers wrap around it.
