How to Update iPhone to iOS 26 and Fix Software Update Problems

To check for an iPhone software update in iOS 26, open Settings → General → Software Update. Your iPhone will show the newest iOS release currently available for that specific model. If an update is offered, review the details, connect to a reliable internet connection and power when practical, then follow the onscreen instructions.

This guide focuses on the current Apple-supported update process. It does not rely on fixed storage requirements, made-up install times, or laboratory claims, because the space and time needed vary by device, update size, network conditions, and what is already installed.

Before you update your iPhone

Apple recommends backing up your iPhone before installing an iOS update. You can use iCloud or a computer. A backup matters because an ordinary software update is designed to preserve your data, but having a current copy protects you if something unexpected happens during troubleshooting or recovery.

Also make sure the iPhone is compatible with the offered software, has enough available storage, is connected to power if needed, and has a working internet connection. Apple lists those as the core prerequisites when an iPhone or iPad will not update.

How to check for and install an iOS update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Wait while iPhone checks Apple’s update service.
  5. If an update appears, tap the available download/install option and follow the prompts.

You do not need to search the web for an IPSW file just to install a normal public update. Software Update is the safest default because it offers software Apple currently supports for your device.

Turn on automatic iOS updates

Go to Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates. Apple separates automatic downloading and installation controls, and also provides controls for automatically installed system files and security improvements. Review the switches rather than assuming every update setting is all-or-nothing.

If you prefer to approve major releases yourself, you can leave automatic installation off and check Software Update manually. Security-related system files can still have their own automatic setting.

If the update does not appear

First confirm that the model can run the release you are expecting. If Apple no longer offers a particular version to that device, Software Update will not create compatibility that the hardware does not have. If a compatible update should be available, restart the iPhone, confirm internet access, and check again.

VPN and proxy connections can sometimes interfere with contacting Apple’s update servers. If you use one and the update service cannot be reached, temporarily disconnect it, retry, then restore your normal network configuration afterward.

If there is not enough storage

Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Apple may offer to temporarily remove apps that can be downloaded again after the update. You can also review large apps and local files yourself. Do not delete irreplaceable photos or documents merely to meet a guessed storage number.

If you need to free space, confirm important data is backed up first. The required free space is not a universal fixed number because update packages and device states differ.

If you see “Unable to Check for Update” or a verification error

Apple recommends trying the update again on the same network first. If the problem persists, try another network or update with a Mac or Windows PC. A temporary server or network failure does not automatically mean the iPhone is damaged.

When a downloaded update repeatedly fails, Apple also documents a clean re-download: go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage, locate the iOS update, tap it, choose Delete Update, then return to Settings → General → Software Update and download it again.

If the progress bar looks stuck

Update progress can move slowly, especially during preparation or verification. Keep the device connected to power and avoid interrupting it simply because the progress bar pauses for a while. If the iPhone is genuinely unresponsive after the update process has clearly failed, use the correct restart procedure for your model rather than repeatedly pressing random buttons.
