iPhone Wi-Fi Settings Explained: Privacy, Auto-Join, DNS and More

Your iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings control more than the network password. For each saved network you can manage Private Wi-Fi Address, Auto-Join, Low Data Mode, IP configuration, and DNS. There is no single “fastest” configuration: the right choices depend on the network, and changing DNS does not guarantee faster internet.

Open the settings for a Wi-Fi network

Go to Settings → Wi-Fi, then tap the information button next to the network. Changes on this screen normally apply to that network rather than every Wi-Fi network your iPhone uses.

Private Wi-Fi Address: Off, Fixed, or Rotating

Apple uses private Wi-Fi addresses to reduce tracking by network operators. On current software, the available behavior is more nuanced than the old on/off toggle.

  • Off: the iPhone uses its hardware Wi-Fi MAC address.
  • Fixed: the iPhone uses a private address that does not rotate for that network. Apple says this is the default for new networks using WPA2 or stronger security.
  • Rotating: the private address changes periodically. Apple says this is the default for new networks using weak security or no security.

If a school, workplace, hotel, or home network registers devices by MAC address, changing this setting can affect access. Do not disable the privacy feature unless the network actually requires it.

Auto-Join

Turn Auto-Join off for a network if you do not want your iPhone reconnecting to it automatically. This is useful for a weak guest network that competes with a better connection. Keep Auto-Join enabled for trusted networks you use regularly.

Low Data Mode

Low Data Mode reduces network use by apps and system services. It can be useful on a metered hotspot or constrained connection. It is not a general Wi-Fi speed booster, so there is little reason to enable it on an unlimited home network unless you specifically want to reduce data activity.

Configure DNS: when manual DNS helps and when it does not

Under a network’s details, Configure DNS lets you use Automatic or manually enter DNS servers. A different resolver can change how domain names are looked up, but it does not increase your Wi-Fi radio speed, ISP bandwidth, or signal strength. The previous version of this article claimed a measured 35% DNS improvement without supporting test evidence; that claim has been removed.

If websites load normally, leaving DNS on Automatic is usually the simplest choice. If you use a managed work or school network, changing DNS can also interfere with internal services or filtering.

Limit IP Address Tracking

This privacy setting can be related to Apple privacy features such as limiting IP-address exposure to known trackers. Availability and behavior can depend on your Apple services and network configuration. If a network requires direct IP visibility for a specific service, troubleshoot that service before disabling privacy features broadly.

If Wi-Fi is slow, check the actual cause first

  1. Test another device on the same network.
  2. Move closer to the access point.
  3. Confirm the problem is Wi-Fi rather than the website or app.
  4. Forget and rejoin the network only if credentials or network configuration may be stale.
  5. Restart the router when multiple devices are affected.
  6. Use Reset Network Settings only after simpler fixes fail, because it removes saved network settings.
