Apple Maps Visited Places Not Working? Fix Missing and Empty History

1. Confirm that your iPhone is on iOS 26
Apple introduced Visited Places with iOS 26. If your iPhone is still on an earlier major version, the Maps setting and Visited Places view will not be available. You can check your version in Settings > General > About.

There is another legitimate limitation: Apple says Visited Places is not available in all countries or regions. If the option is completely absent even though the phone is on iOS 26, availability is one possibility. Do not change your iPhone region or use a VPN just to force the feature; Apple does not document either as a supported fix.
2. Turn on Visited Places and Precise Location for Maps
Apple's current iPhone User Guide gives this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Maps.
- Tap Location.
- Turn on Precise Location and Visited Places.
These are separate controls. Visited Places can be enabled while another location requirement is still blocking useful visit detection. Apple's current instructions specifically call for Precise Location, so verify the switch rather than assuming ordinary Maps navigation means every location-dependent feature is configured correctly.
3. Verify Location Services and Significant Locations & Routes
Visited Places also depends on system-level location settings. Continue in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on. Then open System Services > Significant Locations & Routes and turn on Significant Locations & Routes.
This three-part chain is easy to miss: Maps needs its own Visited Places setting and Precise Location, the iPhone needs Location Services enabled, and System Services needs Significant Locations & Routes. Apple's Maps privacy documentation explicitly says Visited Places requires Significant Locations & Routes plus access to your current location.
4. Do not expect trips from before you enabled the feature
An empty history immediately after setup can be normal. Apple states that only data about places you visit after Visited Places is enabled is shared with Maps. Turning it on today does not tell Maps to reconstruct months of older restaurant, store, or travel history.
This is one of the most important distinctions when troubleshooting. If you enabled the feature recently, test it with future real-world visits rather than repeatedly toggling permissions or resetting networking. A missing trip from before activation is not evidence that the feature is broken.
5. Make sure you are looking in the correct Visited Places view
To review recorded visits, open Maps > Places > Visited Places. Apple lets you search by place name, category, address, or notes, filter by date, category, or city, and tap All Visits.
If a place seems missing, remove active filters and check All Visits before changing system settings. A filtered view can make a correctly recorded visit look absent.
If Maps recorded the wrong place, Apple provides a targeted correction: in Places > Visited Places, tap the More button beside the place and choose Wrong Location. That is more appropriate than resetting every Maps setting because one visit was identified incorrectly.
6. Check retention before assuming older visits were lost
Maps lets you choose how long Visited Places are kept. In Maps > Places > Visited Places, scroll down and tap Keep Visits to review the current retention choice. If older entries have disappeared, this is worth checking before diagnosing a sync failure.
Apple also provides a Clear History control in the same area. Do not use Clear History as a troubleshooting step when your goal is to recover or preserve visits. It removes the history you are trying to inspect; clearing data is not required by Apple's setup instructions.
7. Check sync only after the local settings are correct
Apple says Visited Places can appear on synced devices and are protected with end-to-end encryption. Its Maps privacy page explains that when you are signed in to your Apple Account with two-factor authentication, Maps can keep data such as Visited Places in sync across devices using end-to-end encryption.
If one device shows your visits and another does not, first confirm that the second device is using the expected Apple Account and that its software and Maps location settings are current. Do not sign out of your Apple Account as an early troubleshooting step; signing out is disruptive and Apple does not list it as a normal Visited Places setup requirement.
8. Update and restart only after checking the feature requirements
If every required setting is enabled, the feature is available in your region, and new visits still do not appear, install any available iOS update and restart the iPhone. A restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary app or system state after you have verified the actual prerequisites.

What not to do first
- Do not change the iPhone's country or region just to expose Visited Places. Apple documents regional availability, but not region-switching as a fix.
- Do not clear Visited Places history while trying to recover missing visits. Clear History is a data-management control, not a repair step.
- Do not jump to Reset Network Settings. Apple's Visited Places requirements center on Maps and location settings, not a network reset.
- Do not sign out of your Apple Account just because sync looks delayed. Verify the local requirements and account state first.
Why Visited Places can look broken when it is working normally
Visited Places is not a general archive of every location your iPhone has ever known. It is an opt-in Maps feature that uses location information after activation to help identify places such as restaurants or shops.
