Call Screening Not Working on iPhone? Fix Missing, Ringing, and Voicemail Issues
Share
If Call Screening is not working on your iPhone, first check what “not working” means. In iOS 26, Settings → Apps → Phone → Screen Unknown Callers has three different behaviors: Never lets unsaved numbers ring normally, Ask Reason for Calling screens the caller before your iPhone rings, and Silence sends unsaved callers to voicemail. Call Screening also does not operate while roaming, and Apple turns it off for 24 hours after you call emergency services. Those normal exceptions can look like a broken feature.
If the setting is missing, start by confirming that the iPhone is on iOS 26 and that you are using a supported Call Screening language. Apple lists English (United States) as supported. If the setting exists but behaves differently from what you expect, use the diagnosis table below before resetting anything.
| What you see | Most likely check |
|---|---|
| Unknown callers ring normally | Screen Unknown Callers may be set to Never, the caller may be saved, you may be roaming, or screening may be in the 24-hour emergency-call exception |
| Unknown calls go straight to voicemail | Screen Unknown Callers may be set to Silence; if all calls are affected, also check Focus and other Phone settings |
| Call Screening option is missing | Check iOS version and supported language availability |
| Unknown calls are only moved to a separate list | You may be looking at Call Filtering, which is different from Call Screening |
| Screening worked at home but not while traveling | Apple says calls are not screened while roaming |
1. Check the Screen Unknown Callers mode first
Open Settings → Apps → Phone → Screen Unknown Callers. Apple currently provides three choices:
- Never: unsaved numbers ring normally.
- Ask Reason for Calling: the caller is asked why they are calling before your iPhone rings.
- Silence: unsaved calls are silenced and sent to voicemail.
This single setting explains many apparent failures. If you expected your iPhone to question an unknown caller but Never is selected, normal ringing is expected. If you expected screening but calls go directly to voicemail, make sure Silence is not selected.
Apple’s current unknown-caller support guide documents these modes and their exceptions.
2. Make sure the test caller is actually unknown
Call Screening applies to incoming calls from unsaved numbers. If the number is saved in Contacts, it is not the right test for Screen Unknown Callers.
For a clean check, use a number that is not saved on the iPhone. Do not delete an important contact just to test the feature. If you routinely receive legitimate calls from doctors, schools, delivery drivers, contractors, or clients, Ask Reason for Calling is usually less disruptive than Silence because the caller has a chance to identify the reason for the call.
If your real goal is reducing junk calls rather than troubleshooting the screening feature itself, see the CASEBX guide to blocking and filtering spam calls on iPhone.
3. If you are roaming, Call Screening is expected not to run
This is one of the most important exceptions because there is nothing to repair. Apple states that calls are not screened while roaming, regardless of your Screen Unknown Callers setting.
If Call Screening works normally at home but stops when you travel and your iPhone is roaming, changing the screening option repeatedly will not fix that behavior. Recheck it after you are no longer roaming.
4. If you recently called emergency services, wait for the 24-hour exception
Apple also disables call screening for 24 hours after you call emergency services. During that period, unknown calls can behave differently even though your setting still looks correct.
Do not erase network settings, sign out of your Apple Account, or change your region just to work around this documented safety behavior. If the timing matches an emergency call, allow the 24-hour period to pass, then test again.
5. If Call Screening is missing, check iOS and feature availability
Call Screening arrived with iOS 26. If you do not see Screen Unknown Callers under Settings → Apps → Phone, check for a current software update at Settings → General → Software Update. CASEBX has a step-by-step guide to checking and installing iOS updates.
Apple’s current feature-availability page lists English (United States) as a supported Call Screening language, along with a number of other languages and locales. Availability can therefore differ by language. If you are troubleshooting a U.S. iPhone that uses another language, compare that language against Apple’s current list before assuming the Phone app is malfunctioning.
Do not change your iPhone region solely because a third-party troubleshooting page recommends it. Apple publishes a specific iOS feature-availability list; use that current list instead of guessing.
6. Do not confuse Call Screening with Call Filtering
These controls are close together in Phone settings, but they do different jobs.
| Feature | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Screen Unknown Callers | Controls whether an unsaved caller rings normally, is asked for a reason before the phone rings, or is silenced to voicemail |
| Call Filtering → Unknown Callers | Moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into an Unknown Callers list |
| Spam filtering | Handles calls identified by the carrier as potential spam or fraud when supported |
Turning on the Unknown Callers filter does not mean every unknown call will be screened before ringing. If the call appears in a separate list but still did not behave as expected when it arrived, return to Screen Unknown Callers and verify its mode.
7. If calls go straight to voicemail, check whether the problem affects all callers
If only unsaved numbers go to voicemail and Silence is selected, that is expected. If saved contacts and known callers also go straight to voicemail, the problem is broader than Call Screening.
Apple’s July 14, 2026 support guidance for calls that do not ring recommends checking the Phone app and Focus settings. Open Control Center and make sure an unintended Focus such as Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Work is not active. Then return to Settings → Apps → Phone and review call settings. Apple specifically notes that selecting Never under Screen Unknown Callers allows calls from unknown contacts to ring instead of being silenced.
See Apple’s current guide for calls that do not ring and go straight to voicemail if the issue affects more than unknown callers.
8. Update and restart only after ruling out the documented exceptions
If the correct mode is selected, the caller is genuinely unsaved, you are not roaming, the 24-hour emergency-services exception does not apply, and the feature is available for your software and language, then move to normal system troubleshooting.
- Install any available iOS update from Settings → General → Software Update.
- Restart the iPhone.
- After the restart, return to Settings → Apps → Phone → Screen Unknown Callers and confirm your preferred mode.
- Test again with an unsaved number while the iPhone is not roaming.
If you need the correct restart sequence for your model, use the CASEBX guide to shutting down or force restarting an iPhone.
A network-settings reset is not a good first step for this symptom. Apple’s current Call Screening support page does not list Reset Network Settings, Low Power Mode, or arbitrary region changes as requirements for the feature. Start with Apple’s documented screening mode, caller status, roaming behavior, emergency-services exception, software version, and language availability before using broader resets.
When Call Screening is working correctly
With Ask Reason for Calling selected, an unsaved caller is screened before your iPhone rings. Apple describes the result as getting the caller’s name and reason for the call before deciding whether to answer. The feature is intended to add context to unknown calls, not to guarantee that every scam call will be identified or blocked.
If your goal is to silence every unsaved caller instead, choose Silence. If your goal is to let all unsaved numbers ring normally, choose Never. Picking the mode that matches your real goal is more useful than treating those intentionally different behaviors as errors.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Call Screening not showing on my iPhone?
Check that the iPhone is running iOS 26 or later and compare your language with Apple’s current Call Screening availability list. On a supported setup, look under Settings → Apps → Phone → Screen Unknown Callers.
Why do unknown callers still ring when Call Screening is on?
Check which option is selected. Never intentionally lets unsaved numbers ring normally. Also confirm that the caller is actually unsaved, that you are not roaming, and that you have not called emergency services within the previous 24 hours.
Why are unknown calls going straight to voicemail?
If Silence is selected under Screen Unknown Callers, that is the intended behavior. If known callers are also going straight to voicemail, check Focus and the broader Phone settings rather than treating it as only a Call Screening problem.
Does the Unknown Callers filter turn on Call Screening?
No. Call Filtering and Call Screening are separate. The Unknown Callers filter organizes missed calls and voicemails into a separate list; Screen Unknown Callers controls how unsaved incoming calls are handled before or when they ring.
Why did Call Screening stop working while I was traveling?
If your iPhone is roaming, Apple says calls are not screened regardless of the setting. Test again after you are no longer roaming.
Bottom line
Most Call Screening problems can be narrowed down without invasive resets. Verify Screen Unknown Callers, test with a genuinely unsaved number, rule out roaming and the 24-hour emergency-services exception, confirm current iOS and supported language availability, and only then update or restart. That sequence separates normal iOS 26 behavior from a real Phone app problem without changing unrelated settings.
