Genmoji Not Working on iPhone? Fix Missing, Unavailable, and Person Errors

If Genmoji is missing or not working on your iPhone, first check whether the iPhone supports Apple Intelligence, then confirm Apple Intelligence is turned on, your iPhone and Siri use the same supported language, and the Emoji keyboard is available. In iOS 26, Genmoji is inside the emoji keyboard—not a separate app. If only a specific person or pet is missing, the problem is usually in Photos rather than the keyboard: Apple requires that person or pet to be named in Photos before Genmoji can use them.

This order matters because resetting settings will not make Genmoji appear on unsupported hardware, fix a language mismatch, or identify an unnamed person in Photos.

Quick diagnosis: why Genmoji is missing or not working

What you see Most likely thing to check first
No Genmoji button anywhere iPhone model, Apple Intelligence, language, then Emoji keyboard
Emoji keyboard is missing Add the Emoji keyboard in Settings
Genmoji appears but Apple Intelligence is unavailable Apple Intelligence setup, language, storage, region, or model download
A specific person or pet does not appear Name that person or pet in Photos
Genmoji works in one app but not another Try a standard Apple text field to separate a keyboard issue from an app-specific issue
Genmoji disappeared after changing Siri language Match the device and Siri languages and allow the required language model to download

1. Check whether your iPhone supports Genmoji

Genmoji depends on Apple Intelligence, so an iPhone that can run iOS 26 is not automatically an iPhone that can use Genmoji. Apple currently lists Apple Intelligence support on iPhone 15 Pro models and iPhone 16 models or later. An iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus, for example, can run newer iOS versions but does not meet Apple Intelligence hardware requirements.

If you have an unsupported iPhone, there is no setting, keyboard reset, or software reinstall that can add Genmoji. That makes hardware eligibility the first check—not the last.

Apple also notes that Apple Intelligence availability varies by language and region. For the current requirements, see Apple’s How to get Apple Intelligence page.

2. Find Genmoji in the current iOS 26 keyboard

In iOS 26, you do not launch a separate Genmoji app. Apple’s current path is:

  1. Tap a text field in an app that uses the iPhone keyboard.
  2. Tap the Emoji button or the Next Keyboard key to open the emoji keyboard.
  3. Tap Genmoji at the top right of the onscreen keyboard.

This is important if you are following an older tutorial or looking for Genmoji in a previous iOS layout. Apple changed and expanded the Genmoji interface over time. The current iOS 26 guide says you can combine up to seven elements, including concepts, existing emoji or Genmoji, a description, and a person.

You can verify the current interface in Apple’s Genmoji User Guide.

3. Make sure Apple Intelligence is turned on and ready

If your iPhone supports Apple Intelligence but Genmoji is unavailable, go to:

Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri

Apple says Apple Intelligence must be turned on and the on-device models must be downloaded before its features are ready. Apple recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and power while the models download. Apple also lists 7 GB of device storage as an Apple Intelligence requirement.

If you recently set up the iPhone, updated iOS, changed an Apple Intelligence language, or turned Apple Intelligence back on, do not assume a temporarily unavailable feature means Genmoji itself is broken. Check whether Apple Intelligence is still preparing or downloading first.

4. Match your iPhone language and Siri language

One of the most useful current checks is language matching. Apple requires the device language and Siri language to be set to the same supported language for Apple Intelligence.

Apple’s current supported-language list is much broader than the English-only guidance found in many early Apple Intelligence tutorials. With iOS 26.1 and later, Apple lists support in most regions for English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese, while noting that individual features can still vary by language or region.

If Genmoji disappeared after you changed Siri’s language, Apple specifically warns that Apple Intelligence can become unavailable until the new Siri language has fully downloaded. Match the languages, keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and power, and allow the language model to finish.

5. Add the Emoji keyboard if it is missing

If you cannot get to the emoji keyboard at all, fix that before troubleshooting Genmoji. Apple’s current path is:

Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard > Emoji

Apple confirms this path in its March 30, 2026 emoji keyboard support guide. Once the Emoji keyboard is present, return to a text field, open Emoji, and look for Genmoji at the top right.

For a broader explanation of iOS 26 keyboard controls, see our iPhone keyboard settings guide.

6. If a person or pet is missing, name them in Photos

If Genmoji itself works but you cannot select a particular friend, family member, or pet, do not reset the keyboard. Apple says a person or pet from your photo library must be named in the Photos app before Genmoji can use that subject.

That means this symptom is different from “Genmoji is missing.” The Apple Intelligence and keyboard layers may be working perfectly; Genmoji simply does not have a named Photos identity to offer.

After the person or pet is identified and named in Photos, return to Genmoji, choose the person option, and check again. Apple also lets you edit the starting point for a person-based Genmoji and select a different photo when needed.

7. Update iOS after you check eligibility and settings

Apple advises using the latest available software for the newest Apple Intelligence features. Go to:

Settings > General > Software Update

Install the latest public iOS update offered for your iPhone. This is more useful after you have confirmed that the hardware supports Apple Intelligence and that the language/settings requirements are met. An update cannot add Apple Intelligence to unsupported hardware.

If Software Update itself is the problem, use our iOS 26 software update guide.

8. If Genmoji works in one app but not another

When Genmoji appears in the emoji keyboard in one place but not where you expected to use it, first test it in an Apple app with a standard text field, such as Messages. Apple describes Genmoji as part of the iPhone emoji keyboard and says created Genmoji can be added to messages and shared as stickers or Tapbacks.

If Genmoji is present in a standard Apple text field, your core Apple Intelligence and keyboard setup is working. That narrows the problem to how the other app or text field handles the keyboard or generated content, rather than to Apple Intelligence as a whole.

What not to reset yet

Some Genmoji troubleshooting pages recommend Reset All Settings, network resets, or other broad resets early in the process. Those steps are poor first choices for the most common root causes above.

  • A reset cannot make an unsupported iPhone support Apple Intelligence.
  • A network reset does not correct mismatched iPhone and Siri languages.
  • A settings reset does not name a person or pet in Photos.
  • Removing unrelated settings creates extra work without proving what actually failed.

Start with the exact failure layer instead. If your compatible iPhone has Apple Intelligence enabled and ready, supported matching languages, the Emoji keyboard installed, current iOS, and Genmoji still never appears in a standard Apple text field, then the issue is specific enough to justify Apple Support or deeper device troubleshooting.

Bottom line

If Genmoji is not working on iPhone, the fastest path is to check compatibility → Apple Intelligence → language → Emoji keyboard → Photos naming → iOS update, in that order. The most common mistake is treating every missing Genmoji symptom as the same problem.

A missing Genmoji button points toward eligibility, Apple Intelligence, language, or keyboard setup. A missing person or pet points toward Photos. And if Genmoji works in a standard Apple text field but not somewhere else, the Apple Intelligence setup is probably not the first thing to reset.
