iPhone StandBy Not Working? Fix Black Screen, Charging, and Display Issues
Share
If StandBy is not working on your iPhone, first make sure Settings → StandBy is turned on, connect the iPhone to a charger, place it stationary on its side in landscape orientation, and press the Side button. If StandBy appears and then the screen goes dark, that may be normal: Apple says StandBy stays continuously visible with the Always-On display on supported models, while other iPhones can require a tap, a slight nudge of the table, or Siri to wake the StandBy screen again.
The key is to separate a StandBy setup problem from normal display behavior. Use the checks below in order before resetting settings or changing unrelated battery options.
Start with the exact StandBy requirements
| What you see | What to check first |
|---|---|
| StandBy never appears | Confirm StandBy is enabled, the iPhone is charging, lying on its side, stationary, and then press the Side button. |
| StandBy appears, then the screen turns off | Check whether your iPhone has an Always-On display and review StandBy display preferences. |
| StandBy is red or dim at night | That can be normal Night Mode behavior in low ambient light. |
| The wrong clock, widgets, or photos appear on a MagSafe charger | StandBy can remember a preferred view for each MagSafe charging location. |
| StandBy stopped working after an iOS update | Recheck the StandBy toggle, restart the iPhone, then check for another iOS update. |
1. Turn StandBy on and start it the way Apple documents
Apple's current iOS 26 iPhone User Guide gives a specific sequence for starting StandBy:
- Open Settings.
- Tap StandBy and make sure StandBy is turned on.
- Connect the iPhone to a charger.
- Set the iPhone down on its side and keep it stationary.
- Press the Side button.
If the phone is upright in portrait orientation, moving around in your hand, or not actually charging, you are not testing StandBy under the conditions Apple specifies. Put it on a stable surface or charging stand and test again before changing other settings.
Apple's current iPhone User Guide for StandBy documents these exact startup steps for iOS 26.
2. If the screen goes black, check whether StandBy is actually failing
A black screen after StandBy has already appeared does not automatically mean the feature stopped working. Apple makes an important distinction between iPhones with an Always-On display and other models.
On supported Always-On display models, StandBy can remain visible to show information. On other iPhones, Apple says you can activate StandBy again by tapping the screen, gently nudging the table the iPhone is resting on, or using Siri.
So if StandBy initially appears correctly but the display later sleeps, try waking it before troubleshooting charging, widgets, or iOS. This model difference is one of the most common reasons a working StandBy setup can look broken.
3. Check the StandBy display timeout setting
In iOS 26, Apple provides StandBy display preferences under Settings → StandBy → Display. The current User Guide lists three choices:
- Automatically: the display turns off when the iPhone is not in use and the room is dark.
- After 20 Seconds: the display turns off after 20 seconds.
- Never: the display stays on while StandBy is active.
If your complaint is specifically that StandBy turns off too quickly, review this menu rather than repeatedly disabling and re-enabling StandBy. The display preference controls how long the screen remains visible; it does not replace the basic requirement that the iPhone be charging and positioned on its side.
4. Confirm the iPhone is actually charging
StandBy is a charging-mode feature. If the iPhone is connected to a cable or wireless charger but is not actually receiving power, StandBy may not start as expected.
- Look for the iPhone's normal charging indication.
- If you are using wireless charging, reposition the iPhone so charging begins normally.
- If you are using a cable, reconnect it and confirm the phone recognizes the charger.
- Once charging is confirmed, place the iPhone back on its side, keep it stationary, and press the Side button again.
If the iPhone itself is having a broader charging problem, solve that first. StandBy cannot be used as a reliable charging diagnostic because the feature depends on charging already working.
5. Do not mistake Night Mode for a display problem
When Night Mode is enabled for StandBy, Apple says the screen adapts to low ambient light and displays items with a red tint so the display is less intrusive while you are sleeping.
If the StandBy screen becomes dimmer or red at night but looks normal during the day, that can be expected behavior rather than a screen defect. Review your StandBy settings before changing global display or color-accessibility options.
6. Understand why the view can change with different MagSafe charging locations
Apple says StandBy can remember your preferred view at each location where you charge the iPhone with MagSafe. That means the clock, photos, or widgets you see at your bedside can differ from the view remembered at another MagSafe charging location.
If StandBy seems to show the “wrong” view only on one MagSafe charger, switch to the view you want while using that charger and check it again later. The location-specific memory is a feature, not evidence that StandBy settings failed to sync.
7. If StandBy stopped after an update, restart before resetting anything
If the setup requirements are correct and StandBy still does not appear, a normal restart is a reasonable reversible troubleshooting step.
Our iPhone restart guide explains the correct procedure by model. If the phone is responsive, use a normal shutdown and restart rather than a force restart.
After the restart:
- Return to Settings → StandBy and confirm the toggle is on.
- Connect the iPhone to power.
- Place it stationary on its side.
- Press the Side button.
8. Check for a newer iOS update
If StandBy still behaves incorrectly after a restart, open Settings → General → Software Update and check what Apple currently offers for your iPhone model.
Use our iPhone software update guide if Software Update itself is not working. Do not install an old beta or manually downloaded software package just to troubleshoot StandBy; use the normal Apple-supported update path.
What not to do first
StandBy troubleshooting normally does not require erasing the iPhone, resetting all settings, resetting network settings, or deleting apps. Those actions do not address the basic StandBy requirements of charging, landscape positioning, the StandBy toggle, and display behavior.
Start with the reversible checks above. If the iPhone also has a charging, display, or system-wide software problem outside StandBy, troubleshoot that broader symptom separately.
Why common StandBy “problems” may be normal
- The screen sleeps on a non-Always-On iPhone: Apple says other models can wake StandBy again with a tap, a slight table nudge, or Siri.
- The screen turns red at night: Night Mode can intentionally use a red tint in low light.
- StandBy appears only while charging: charging is part of the feature's documented startup conditions.
- A different MagSafe charger shows a different view: StandBy can remember the preferred view by MagSafe charging location.
- The display turns off after a set period: review Settings → StandBy → Display for the current timeout choice.
Frequently asked questions
Does StandBy work only on iPhones with an Always-On display?
No. Apple's current User Guide distinguishes Always-On display models from other iPhones rather than limiting StandBy to Always-On models. The difference is that supported Always-On models can keep StandBy visible, while other models may require you to wake the screen again.
Why does StandBy turn off after 20 seconds?
Check Settings → StandBy → Display. Apple's current iOS 26 guide includes an After 20 Seconds option as well as Automatically and Never.
Why is StandBy red at night?
That is usually Night Mode. Apple says Night Mode adapts StandBy to low ambient light and displays items with a red tint so the screen is less intrusive while you sleep.
Does the iPhone need to be horizontal for StandBy?
Apple's current setup instructions say to connect the iPhone to a charger and set it down on its side while keeping it stationary. If it is upright in portrait orientation, reposition it before assuming StandBy is broken.
