NameDrop Not Working on iPhone? Check These Settings in iOS 26
Share
If NameDrop is not working on your iPhone, first go to Settings > General > AirDrop and make sure Bring Devices Together is turned on. Then hold the display of your iPhone a few centimeters from the top of the other iPhone or compatible Apple Watch and keep the devices close until NameDrop appears on both screens. One important limitation can look like a failure: Apple says NameDrop sends new contact information; it does not update a contact that already exists.
Check these five things first
- Bring Devices Together is on: NameDrop is controlled from Settings > General > AirDrop.
- You keep the devices close long enough: moving them apart or locking the iPhone cancels the transfer before it finishes.
- You are sharing a new contact: NameDrop does not merge changes into an existing contact card.
- The devices meet the software requirements: Apple lists iOS 17.1 and watchOS 10.1 or later for NameDrop.
- The Apple Watch is supported: Apple lists Apple Watch Series 7 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models.
1. Turn on Bring Devices Together
NameDrop is part of AirDrop, but proximity sharing has its own switch. On each iPhone you want to use for NameDrop:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap AirDrop.
- Turn on Bring Devices Together.
Apple says NameDrop is on by default, and turning off Bring Devices Together disables NameDrop along with other proximity-based sharing features. If this switch was off, turn it on and try again before changing any network settings.
2. Make sure you are not trying to update an existing contact
This is one of the easiest NameDrop behaviors to misdiagnose. Apple explicitly says NameDrop works for sending new contact information, not for updating an existing contact. If the other person is already saved in Contacts, changing your phone number, email address, or Contact Poster and using NameDrop again should not be treated as a guaranteed way to merge those changes into their existing entry.
If an existing contact needs a new number or email address, edit that contact in the Contacts app instead. If you are testing whether NameDrop itself works, test with a person whose contact information is not already saved on the receiving device.
3. Position the devices the way Apple specifies
NameDrop is triggered by bringing the devices together, not simply by placing two unlocked iPhones somewhere in the same room. Apple’s current iPhone User Guide says to hold the display of your iPhone a few centimeters from the top of the other person’s iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Unlock both devices.
- Bring the top edges close together, with your iPhone display near the top of the other device.
- Keep them close until the NameDrop interface appears on both screens.
- Choose Share if you want to send your selected contact details, or Receive Only if you only want the other person’s information.
- Keep the devices near each other until the transfer completes.
If NameDrop briefly appears and then disappears, do not immediately reset the iPhone. Apple notes that moving the devices apart or locking the iPhone before the transfer finishes cancels the process.
4. Check the contact information NameDrop is actually sharing
If NameDrop opens but shows the wrong phone number, email address, name, or Contact Poster, the connection may be working correctly and the problem may instead be your own Contact Card.
- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap My Card.
- Tap Edit.
- Review the name, phone numbers, email addresses, and Contact Poster information you want available for sharing.
Apple’s Personal Safety guide says NameDrop shares your name, the phone number or email address you choose, and Contact Poster information associated with your Contact Card. It does not automatically share other fields such as your home address or birthday. That distinction is useful if NameDrop completes but the recipient says some information is missing.
5. Check Apple Watch compatibility before troubleshooting the iPhone
If NameDrop works between two iPhones but not between an iPhone and an Apple Watch, check the watch model and software before assuming the iPhone has a wireless problem.
| Device | NameDrop requirement Apple lists |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iOS 17.1 or later |
| Apple Watch Series | Series 7 or later, with watchOS 10.1 or later |
| Apple Watch SE | 2nd generation or later, with watchOS 10.1 or later |
| Apple Watch Ultra | Ultra models, with watchOS 10.1 or later |
If the watch is outside Apple’s supported list, repeatedly changing AirDrop settings on the iPhone will not add NameDrop support to that watch.
6. Update iOS if one device is behind
If one iPhone is running an older release or you are unsure whether it is current, check Settings > General > Software Update. Apple’s current iOS 26 User Guide uses that exact path. Installing an available update can also resolve software bugs without erasing your personal data or settings, although making a backup before updating is still good practice.
For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our guide to updating an iPhone and fixing software-update problems. Apple also documents the current process in its iPhone software update guide.
7. Restart the iPhone if the setting and compatibility are correct
If Bring Devices Together is enabled, the devices are compatible, and NameDrop still never appears, restart the iPhone and test again. A normal restart is a reversible troubleshooting step and does not erase your data. If the iPhone is frozen or will not respond normally, our iPhone restart and force-restart guide explains the correct button sequence for current models.
If ordinary AirDrop is also not working
NameDrop is part of AirDrop, so it is useful to separate a NameDrop-only problem from a broader AirDrop problem. Try sending a photo or another small item with standard AirDrop. If standard AirDrop also fails, check the wider wireless conditions instead of focusing only on Bring Devices Together.
Apple’s current AirDrop guidance says nearby devices should have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on and should be within range. For ordinary AirDrop receiving, the recipient’s AirDrop receiving setting also matters. Apple’s current AirDrop instructions for iPhone and iPad cover those controls.
Do not assume that changing an ordinary AirDrop receiving option is the specific fix for every NameDrop failure. Use the standard AirDrop test mainly to determine whether the problem is broader than proximity-based contact sharing.
What not to reset first
A NameDrop problem by itself is not a good reason to start with Reset Network Settings or Erase All Content and Settings. Those actions are much more disruptive than checking the NameDrop switch, device positioning, compatibility, software version, and expected contact behavior. If Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ordinary AirDrop otherwise work, a factory erase would be especially disproportionate.
Why NameDrop can look broken when it is working normally
| What you see | What it may mean | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when the iPhones touch | Bring Devices Together may be off, or the devices may not be positioned correctly | Settings > General > AirDrop, then retry top-to-top |
| NameDrop appears, then disappears | The devices were separated or the iPhone was locked before completion | Keep both devices close until the transfer finishes |
| The other person already exists in Contacts and nothing updates | Normal NameDrop limitation | NameDrop sends new contact information; edit the existing contact manually |
| iPhone-to-iPhone works, but iPhone-to-Watch does not | The watch model or watchOS version may not support NameDrop | Check Apple Watch model and watchOS version |
| NameDrop completes but a field is missing | The field may not have been selected or may not be a field NameDrop shares | Review Contacts > My Card > Edit and the fields selected during sharing |
Frequently asked questions
Can NameDrop update a contact I already saved?
No. Apple says NameDrop is for sending new contact information, not updating an existing contact. Edit the saved contact manually if you need to change an existing phone number or email address.
How do I turn NameDrop back on?
Go to Settings > General > AirDrop and turn on Bring Devices Together. That is the current Apple setting that controls NameDrop proximity sharing.
Which Apple Watches support NameDrop?
Apple lists Apple Watch Series 7 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models. Apple also lists watchOS 10.1 or later as the software requirement for NameDrop on Apple Watch.
What information does NameDrop share?
Apple says NameDrop shares your name, the phone number or email address you choose, and associated Contact Poster information. It does not automatically share other Contact Card details such as your home address or birthday.
