1. Confirm Screen Unknown Senders is actually turned on
Apple changed the Messages filtering experience in iOS 26, so an older tutorial may point you to a different control. Open Messages, tap Filters, tap Manage Filtering, then under Unknown Senders turn on Screen Unknown Senders. You can also go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders.
Apple says Screen Unknown Senders is off by default in iOS 26. There is one migration exception: if you had Filter Unknown Senders enabled in iOS 18, Screen Unknown Senders is turned on when you upgrade to iOS 26. That can explain why two iPhones upgraded from different settings behave differently.

2. Look in the Unknown Senders filter, not only the main list
With screening enabled, eligible messages are routed to a separate list. In Messages, tap Filters > Unknown Senders. Apple says a badge can indicate that new messages are waiting there.
This matters because screening is an organization feature, not a promise that every unfamiliar sender disappears without a trace. If the message is in Unknown Senders, the screening itself is working even if you expected a different notification behavior.
3. Check Allow Notifications before deciding the filter failed
For U.S. users, this is one of the most important checks. Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders > Allow Notifications. Apple currently lists four categories you can control: Time Sensitive, Personal, Transactions, and Promotions.
Time Sensitive messages, including examples such as verification codes, alerts, and urgent requests, can notify you by default. Apple also says that when notifications are allowed for an unknown-sender message, that conversation can appear in the main conversation list for eight hours before moving to Unknown Senders. So a temporary main-list appearance can be expected behavior rather than a filtering defect.
Options vary by country and region. Apple specifically says users in the United States, Brazil, and India can adjust which unknown-sender categories send notifications.
4. Check whether the sender is already treated as known
Do not assume “not in Contacts” automatically means “unknown.” Apple defines an unknown sender more broadly as someone you have not previously interacted with in Messages or someone who is not in your contacts.
If you previously used Mark as Known or added that person to Contacts, future messages can appear in your regular conversation list. To review an unknown conversation, go to Messages > Filters > Unknown Senders. If you intentionally want it in the main list, open the conversation and tap Mark as Known.
There is another important rule: Apple says message filtering does not apply to a sender you have replied to three times or more. If one specific number keeps bypassing the unknown-sender filter after an ongoing exchange, that behavior may be expected.
5. Do not confuse Screen Unknown Senders with Text Message Filter
These controls solve different problems. Screen Unknown Senders separates eligible conversations from unknown senders. Text Message Filter can organize SMS, MMS, and RCS messages from unknown senders into categories such as Transactions and Promotions, and it can also work with installed third-party message-filtering extensions.
If your complaint is “bank alerts are not going into Transactions” or “promotional texts are not being categorized,” check Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering > Text Message Filter. Turning Screen Unknown Senders off and on will not necessarily fix category sorting.

6. Separate unknown-sender screening from spam and blocking
Screening, spam filtering, and blocking are not interchangeable. A message can be routed away from your main conversation list without the sender being blocked. Likewise, reporting a message as spam is not the same action as blocking the sender.

7. Restart Messages and then restart the iPhone
If the settings are correct but Messages is behaving inconsistently, close and reopen Messages, then test again with a new incoming message. If the problem continues, restart the iPhone. A restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary app or system state without changing your message history, network settings, or Apple Account.

8. Install the latest iOS update available for your iPhone
