Workout Buddy Not Working on Apple Watch? Fix Missing and Silent Coaching

If Workout Buddy is missing or silent on your Apple Watch, check the paired iPhone before resetting anything. Workout Buddy depends on Apple Intelligence running through a nearby compatible iPhone, supported Apple Watch hardware, English device and Siri language, Bluetooth audio, and a supported workout type. A Watch that can run watchOS 26 is not automatically enough.

Use the checks below in order. They separate an eligibility problem from an audio problem, which is faster and safer than unpairing the Watch or resetting network settings.

Quick diagnosis: why Workout Buddy is not working

What you see Most likely cause Check first
Workout Buddy option is missing Unsupported Watch/iPhone, language, or workout type Hardware eligibility and English language settings
Workout Buddy appears but will not start Paired iPhone is not nearby or Apple Intelligence is unavailable Keep the paired iPhone nearby and confirm Apple Intelligence is on
Workout starts but there is no coaching audio No Bluetooth headphones/speaker, muted Workout Buddy, or audio connection issue Bluetooth audio and the in-workout Mute control
It works for running but not another activity The second activity may not be a supported workout type Apple's current supported-workout list
It disappeared after changing Siri language Workout Buddy is English-only and Apple Intelligence can pause while language resources download Device and Siri language

1. Confirm that both the Apple Watch and paired iPhone are eligible

Workout Buddy is an Apple Intelligence feature, so compatibility has two parts. Apple currently supports Workout Buddy on Apple Watch Series 6 and later, all Apple Watch Ultra models, and Apple Watch SE 2 and later. The Watch must also be paired with a nearby Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.

That second requirement is easy to miss. You can have a supported Apple Watch and still have no Workout Buddy if the paired iPhone cannot run Apple Intelligence. Apple currently lists iPhone 15 Pro models and iPhone 16 models or later as Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones.

Before troubleshooting settings, compare both devices with Apple's current Apple Intelligence requirements. If the paired iPhone is not supported, changing Watch settings will not enable Workout Buddy.

2. Keep the paired iPhone nearby

Workout Buddy is not designed to run from the Watch alone. Apple specifically requires a nearby Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. If the feature works at home but disappears or stops when you exercise without your iPhone, this requirement is the first thing to check.

For testing, keep the paired iPhone powered on and nearby, then open Workout on the Watch again. Avoid diagnosing the Watch while the iPhone is left in a car, locker, or another distant room.

Apple does not publish a specific Workout Buddy distance in feet or meters, so there is no reliable universal cutoff to quote. The useful test is simply to bring the paired iPhone close to the Watch and retry.

3. Connect Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker

Workout Buddy delivers spoken coaching, and Apple requires Bluetooth headphones or speakers. This is not an AirPods-only feature: compatible Bluetooth audio can satisfy the requirement.

If Workout Buddy is visible but silent, first confirm that your headphones or speaker are actually connected and selected as the audio destination. If the Bluetooth accessory keeps disconnecting from the iPhone, use our iPhone Bluetooth guide to check the connection before changing Workout Buddy settings.

Also check that Workout Buddy was not muted during the workout. Apple says you can swipe right during a workout and tap Mute; if you used that control earlier, verify the coaching is not still being silenced during your test.

4. Turn on Apple Intelligence and check the language

On the paired iPhone, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and make sure Apple Intelligence is enabled. Apple notes that its on-device models may need time to download after a software update. Keeping the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power helps the models download faster.

Workout Buddy has a stricter language rule than Apple Intelligence overall: Apple currently lists Workout Buddy as English only. The Apple Watch guide also says the device language and Siri language need to be set to English for Workout Buddy.

If the feature disappeared after you changed Siri language, do not assume the Watch is broken. Apple says Apple Intelligence can become temporarily unavailable while the new Siri language downloads and until it matches the device language. Set the relevant device and Siri language back to English, allow any required language resources to finish downloading, then test again.

5. Turn on Workout Buddy for the workout you want to use

Workout Buddy is enabled from the Workout app rather than from a general Watch settings switch. Apple's current Workout Buddy setup flow is:

  1. Open Workout on Apple Watch.
  2. Turn the Digital Crown to the workout you want.
  3. Tap the Alerts button.
  4. Tap Workout Buddy.
  5. Turn on Use Workout Buddy.
  6. Choose a voice, go back, and start the workout.

If you cannot find Workout Buddy at that point, return to the eligibility, language, and workout-type checks rather than repeatedly toggling unrelated settings.

6. Test with a workout type Apple actually supports

Workout Buddy is not available for every workout in the Workout app. Apple's current user guide lists these supported types:

  • Outdoor Run and Indoor Run
  • Outdoor Walk and Indoor Walk
  • Outdoor Cycle and Indoor Cycle
  • Hiking
  • Elliptical
  • Stair Stepper
  • High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
  • Functional Strength Training and Traditional Strength Training

This creates a useful diagnostic test. If Workout Buddy appears for an Outdoor Walk but not for another activity outside Apple's list, the missing option is expected behavior, not proof of a software fault.

7. Update the iPhone and Apple Watch

If all requirements are met but Workout Buddy is still missing or unreliable, install the latest software available for both devices. Workout Buddy is a watchOS 26-era Apple Intelligence feature, and Apple can change feature availability and fixes through software updates.

On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Our iOS update guide walks through that process. For Apple Watch, use the Watch app on the paired iPhone or the Software Update controls on the Watch, following Apple's update instructions for your current version.

Do not install beta software merely to fix Workout Buddy. Use the current public release unless you intentionally participate in Apple's beta program and accept the additional risk.

8. Reconnect audio and restart before using invasive fixes

If Workout Buddy is enabled for a supported workout but remains silent, disconnect and reconnect the Bluetooth headphones or speaker, then restart the iPhone and Apple Watch. A normal restart is a lower-risk step than unpairing the Watch, signing out of the Apple Account, or resetting network settings.

If you need the iPhone restart steps, see our iPhone restart guide. After both devices are back on, keep the iPhone nearby, reconnect Bluetooth audio, and test one supported workout again.

If the option is still missing after the compatibility, language, Apple Intelligence, workout-type, software, and audio checks all pass, contact Apple Support. At that point, the problem is more likely to need account- or device-specific diagnosis than another generic reset.

Why Workout Buddy can be silent even when it is working

Workout Buddy does not promise nonstop narration. Apple describes it as providing personalized spoken motivation around workout context, milestones, and a post-workout summary. During a workout, it may call out moments such as fitness milestones rather than speaking continuously.

That means a quiet stretch is different from complete failure. A better test is to confirm that Workout Buddy is enabled, Bluetooth audio is connected, and the feature produces expected coaching across a supported workout rather than judging it by a few silent minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need AirPods for Workout Buddy?

No. Apple requires Bluetooth headphones, earphones, or speakers; it does not make AirPods a requirement. AirPods are one option, but compatible Bluetooth audio can work as well.

Can Workout Buddy work if I leave my iPhone at home?

Apple's current requirements say Workout Buddy needs a nearby Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone paired with the Watch. If you leave the paired iPhone behind, do not expect Workout Buddy to operate as a Watch-only feature.

Why does Workout Buddy show for running but not another workout?

Apple only supports specific workout types. Running, walking, cycling, hiking, elliptical, stair stepper, HIIT, and functional or traditional strength training are on the current list. A workout outside that list may not show the Workout Buddy option.

Why did Workout Buddy disappear after I changed Siri language?

Workout Buddy is currently English-only, and Apple requires the device and Siri language to be English for the feature. Apple Intelligence can also become temporarily unavailable while a changed Siri language finishes downloading and matches the device language.

Should I unpair my Apple Watch to fix Workout Buddy?

Not as a first step. Verify compatibility, the nearby paired iPhone, Apple Intelligence, English language settings, Bluetooth audio, the selected workout type, and current software first. If all of those pass, restarting is less invasive than unpairing. Use Apple Support for device-specific help before erasing or rebuilding a working Watch setup.
