Apple's current standard iPhone 17 case lineup
The most important correction is product relevance. FineWoven is no longer one of the main current cases for the standard iPhone 17. Apple's current U.S. iPhone 17 accessory catalog highlights the Silicone Case with MagSafe and Clear Case with MagSafe. FineWoven remains in accessories such as the MagSafe Wallet, while TechWoven is available for iPhone 17 Pro models.

Apple Silicone Case: soft-touch first-party option
Apple says the current iPhone 17 Silicone Case contains 45% recycled silicone material, has a silky soft-touch exterior and a microfiber lining. Built-in magnets align with iPhone 17 for MagSafe and the case can stay on the phone during Qi2 25W or Qi charging.
Camera Control is not handled by a simple open cutout. Apple uses a sapphire crystal coupled to a conductive layer to pass finger movements to Camera Control. The case also attaches to Apple's current Crossbody Strap.
The old article rated grip 8.5/10 and assigned a six-foot CASEBX drop result. Those figures were not supported by documented testing and have been removed.
Apple Clear Case: transparent first-party option
Apple's Clear Case uses optically clear polycarbonate and flexible materials, with scratch-resistant coating on the interior and exterior. Apple says the materials and coatings are optimized to prevent yellowing over time.
That wording matters: “optimized to prevent yellowing” is not the same as a lifetime guarantee that every component will remain perfectly colorless. This update therefore removes the old absolute claims and invented nine-to-twelve-month aging prediction.
The Clear Case also includes built-in magnets, supports Qi2 25W/Qi charging and uses the same sapphire-crystal/conductive-layer approach for Camera Control.
What happened to FineWoven cases?
The old version treated FineWoven Case as one of three current standard iPhone case choices and then recommended avoiding it based on supposed CASEBX wear testing. That framing is obsolete. Apple's current standard iPhone 17 case listings do not center on a FineWoven Case. FineWoven remains in products such as Apple's MagSafe Wallet, while Apple's iPhone 17 Pro case lineup includes TechWoven.
There is no reason to keep a discontinued or no-longer-current case at the center of an iPhone 17 buying guide simply because it existed for an earlier generation.
Protection: Apple does not publish a simple drop-height rating
Apple states that its designed cases undergo thousands of hours of testing during design and manufacturing and are built to protect against scratches and drops. It does not publish a directly comparable “X feet” rating for these standard iPhone 17 cases.
That means the old table's five-foot and six-foot CASEBX ratings should not be presented as fact. If maximum ruggedness is the priority, compare Apple's cases with products that are explicitly built and marketed for heavier protection.
